Salmonella Illness Count Rises (Washington, DC) -- The number of people stricken in a Salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes has risen to 756. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say people in 34 states and the District of Columbia have been infected with a rare strain of Salmonella. Texas has been hit hardest, with 330 people becoming ill there. New Mexico is next, with 80 cases. Investigators said last Friday they expect more people to become sickened, because the outbreak is still under way. The CDC says no deaths have been been attributed to the illness. However, the agency says the illness, quote, "may have contributed" to the death of a Texas man who died from cancer. (Copyright 2008 by Newsroom Solutions) RNS-06-27-08 0313CDT
