breaking news
Detectives are speaking with two people who may be a reason an overnight fire gutted an abandoned home early Friday morning. Nothing is left of the duplex on West Illinois and Reed.
Firefighters are calling the fire suspicious and neighbors arent surprised.
Barely anything is left at the site of the fire besides debris and the skelton of what used to be an abandoned home.
Also left is this shopping cart a clue to what neighbors think may have happened.
Most likely no one could survive a big blaze so its lucky no one lives here.
The fire at an abandoned home on West Illinois started around two in the morning.
The smoke is so thick you can barely see the flames.
Firefighters even had fight the fire from the inside.
They say it the cause is suspicious.
Even though no one lives there and theres no electricity - neighbors are not shocked
"Its like a shleter for homeless people," says neighbor Kim Deweese
Neighbors say the homeless were around so much they acted like it was their home.
"There was a couple from the neighborhood with medical problems."
They were the first people she thought of when she saw the 20 feet tall flames
"I thought the girl was in their burnt up fell asleep smoking a cigarette, had candles in it."
The empty house was never boarded up and neighbors are shocked no one was hurt.
"Its really lucky no one was hurt there was no electricity so someone was in there."
Neighbors say its probably good news the house is in ruins.
Now maybe it will be knocked down and the homeless will stop coming in and out.
Firefighters say the blaze started under the stairs which is what made it impossible for them to get inside to fight the fire.
