The Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation met again in executive session Monday night to discuss its latest candidate for superintendent. After the closed door session, board members met in public to discuss upcoming interviews with Dr. Vince Bertram.
Bertram is an assistant superintendent with the Lafayette, Indiana school corporation, and is taking time to pursue a Masters degree in urban education from Harvard.
Bertram will be back in Evansville Friday for a second interview with the school board, as well as an interview with a citizens advisory committee that includes members of several local professional organizations. School board members have also arranged for Bertram to tour several schools.
In the days leading up to those interviews, several "site visits" will be conducted. Those visits are actually conducted mostly by phone, and consist of board members speaking with the candidates peers and other members of the Lafayette community to get a better feel for how he is perceived by those who know him.
The progress of this latest candidate is not a guarantee of success, according to school board president Dana Willett. He said Monday that the board is simply ready to learn more about him.
Willett also said there are 11 other candidates who have submitted applications to BWP, the consulting group hired by the EVSC to help with the superintendent search. The boards new "one at a time" interview process precludes them from interviewing those candidates until they have determined what they want to do with Dr. Bertram.
