Duffer Duffy Resigns

By: Web Producer
Updated: May 10, 2007
Duffer Duffy is out as Henderson County football coach. Duffy submitted his letter of resignation to School Superintendent Dr. Thomas Richey Wednesday afternoon, ending his three year tenure on the Colonels sidelines. Duffys dad, Tom, resigned as an assistant coach at the end of last season, which could be one of several reasons that Duffy is leaving. Duffer and Tom are very close. FOX 7 sources close to the Henderson County football program say Tom is in the process of selling his Henderson home and that he and his wife will leave town soon. Duffy is a defendant in a civil lawsuit filed by Randy and Marlowe Owens regarding the death of their son, Ryan, last summer. Ryan Owens, a 16 year old lineman, collapsed and died following football practice on July 19th. Owens died of an apparent heart condition, but heat stroke is also likely to be a factor. Duffys staff and the Henderson County school board have been under pressure ever since. Duffy has reportedly accepted a position as the Offensive Coordinator at Fairhope High School in Alabama. He was 31-7 and guided the Colonels to the KHSAA Class 4A semi-finals last year.
