No Paid Sick Days Cause Suffering Among American Workers
Around 43-percent of American workers are not paid to stay home from work when they fall sick.
The "Los Angeles Times" reports many private industrys across the country will penalize employees for calling in sick, and sometimes resort to firing them.
A 2007 data report from the federal government shows the number of people without sick pay has risen over the years.
An expert on absence management, Kim Stattner, says sick time is changing.
She said, quote, "the practices and designs are not as generous as they once were." California lawmakers have taken the changes into consideration and are working on legislation that requires earned sick time.
The so-called "Healthy Families, Healthy Workplaces" bill would allow workers one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours they work.
Several other states are also considering paid-sick-day laws.
