Hockey and figure skating fans are rejoicing in Owensboro, Kentucky after the City Commission approved a $6 million plan to build a replacement ice rink. The move came after more than an hour of debate and discussion during the Tuesday Commission meeting. Several dozen ice rink supporters came to back the plan, and several spoke in favor of building it now rather than waiting. Commissioners expressed apprehension that fast tracking the project could compromise access to state funds and prevent the rink from being built in the best possible location. In the end, though, they compromised on a plan that will construct a new area by 2008 in Moreland Park, not far from where the current rink sits. The new area will be built on land currently owned by the Kentucky National Guard. The city may be able to tap nearly $4 million in funding from reserves set aside for such construction.
