Language Barriers Won't Delay Daviess Co. 911

Daviess County, Kentucky Sheriffs investigators say they are making progress in their search for suspects in a fatal weekend stabbing. 34 year old Jeremias Roblero was stabbed once in the abdomen, and pronounced dead on arrival at Owensboro Medical Health Systems emergency room. Investigators are still looking into the events leading up to the stabbing. Acquaintances say Roblero had recently returned to the area after working landscaping jobs in Virginia. They say Roblero was a Mexican native, and back in town looking for work. He was with several other men the night he died. Investigators are trying to interview those men, but language has been a barrier. At one point during the night of the attack, a Spanish speaking person called 9-1-1 to report the stabbing. Dispatchers immediately linked the call to a service called Language Lines, which provides live translators 24 hours a day. They were able to determine that there had been a stabbing, and that the victim was en route to the hospital emergency room. Had the 9-1-1 call come in earlier, an ambulance crew might have been able to administer faster, potentially life saving care at the scene of the attack. Dispatchers say Language Lines lets them translate 150 different languages with little or no lag time. They are urging any non-English speaking residents of the county to call for help first, rather than trying to seek it out. Language Lines has been in use in Daviess County for about 4 years.
