A gas leak, a building evacuation, and a water main break...all three happened within minutes of each other on the east-side of Evansville
It happened around 1 oclock along South Stockwell Road, off the Lloyd Expressway.
Construction crews were hard at work on street improvements when something went wrong.
District Fire Chief Greg Main says, "They had a construction crew that was working in front of the Stepping Stone facility and they hit a four inch gas main."
Evansville firefighters and police officers responded immediately. Due to the gas leak, rescuers decided to take extra precautions. Main says, "We had to enforce an evacuation at Stepping Stone. We brought some METS buses in to provide shelter and transportation to another facility."
About fifty people were evacuated from the building as crews worked to shut off the gas line.
No one was hurt and authorities say thats due to two reasons: a quick response and cooperation from everyone involved.
The evacuation order was lifted about an hour after the leak occurred. All roads are open, and both the gas line and water main have been capped.
