Cracks in the asphalt caused a shut down of a portion of the twin bridges. That means - the southbound span will be down to one lane for the next 3 days. As the narrowing of the twin bridges southbound lanes got underway cars driving along seemed to be making the transition smoothly. And that was pretty much the case during the very early morning hours until a major problem arose. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials say they noticed that parts of the right shoulder of the southbound lane were beginning to crumble as early as 8:00 in the morning. Thats when they decided to shut down the right lane leaving only one lane open to traffic. "Where trucks have been running on that shoulder it started beating up the asphalt. We have what about a dozen pot holes there and a number of cracks through there. We gonna have to get a milling machine in here. Mill up that asphalt rebuild the base and then come back and put in new asphalt," says Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Its a set back that road crews were not expecting. But those using the bridge say the drive wasnt that bad....at least not yet. "Traffic was moving ok. Its just rather slow probably about 30 miles per hour," says driver Bill Ewin "Anytime they do construction they narrow your lanes down a little bit theyre plenty wide enough for a car, theyre plenty wide enough for a truck. Its just called patience and paying attention to what youre doing." says truck driver Steve Chittum Transportation officials are hoping that traffic continues to move smoothly without any issues. But they are concerned about getting the lane fixed in time to move the south bound bridge to three lanes of traffic . Trying not to delay work on the northbound lanes because of this problem. "As you can see traffic is moving pretty good everybodys merging. Its working pretty good so far," says Todd Hoping that that is still the case in the coming days. A milling machine is scheduled to be on the bridge wednesday -- and transportation officials warn lane changes could be a daily routine for the rest of the week
