A proposed bike helmet law for kids 16 and under has been put on hold. The Evansville City Council decided not to even vote on the measure, instead opting to hold it indefinitely in committee.
Ordinance supporter and girl scout Ellen McKinny detailed the dangers of failing to wear a helmet during a presentation to the Council. As part of a girl scout project, she has collected enough money to give 150 helmets to kids in need at the Boys and Girls Club. Despite her passion for bike safety, the Council opted to pass on further discussion.
The measure would have allowed police to stop kids not wearing helmets and issue them fines.
