Evansvilles 35th annual Freedom Festival officially kicked-off Friday. Many of the activities began Wednesday but the crowds at the ceremony were witness to a number of events. Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel presented a proclamation for the event, a B-52 flew over the event, and nearly 30 individuals committed to serve their country during the event. This years festival theme is " A salute to hometown heroes". A fitting theme for the swearing-in of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army recruits. North Posey High senior, Ashland Harnishfeger, was just one of the recruits. She says the ceremony made her feel proud and happy to finally be doing something to help her country. Harnishfeger plans on participating in a job training program in the U.S. Army for broadcast journalism.
