Property Tax Special Session

By: LaTonya Stephens
Updated: July 10, 2007
An Indiana representative is calling for a bi-partisan solution to the property tax problem. In a press conference Tuesday Republican Representative Suzanne Crouch she says she believes that both republicans and democrats should work together to come up with a solution. She says that solution should also include economists who are experts in the field. Representative crouch says she did not vote for the state budget because it does not provide enough property tax relief for the average homeowner. But disagrees with Governor Mitch Danielss call for a possible special session. She says as elected officials they were paid to do a job and they already did it. She says taxpayers should not foot the bill for more band aid approaches to the issue. Democratic Representative Dennis Avery agrees but believes it is a local issue. He says the answer is to move away from property tax and move toward a more broad based local tax to fund local services. Meanwhile, Governor Mitch Daniels says he will make a decision on whether to call that special session in the coming weeks.
