Vanderburgh County officially has a new animal ordinance. Commissioners unanimously approved the second reading of the ordinance on Tuesday afternoon. The measure is aimed at cutting down on noisy, aggressive, and un-leashed dogs. Its also designed to keep pets safe from inhumane treatment. Commissioners approved the first reading of the ordinance back in April, but some dog owners complained it was too strict - so a panel including representatives from the humane society, animal control, and the sheriffs department helped re-work the ordinance before Tuesdays final vote. Tuesdays vote means the ordinance is now in effect, but commissioners will vote on the actual enforcement portion of the ordinance on August 14th.
