Emergency officials in Ohio county say Thursdays brush fire is now contained.
Firefighters from eight departments worked well into the night to extinguish the fire near Rockport.
The fire burned more than 500 acres on what was once the Old Kings mine.
Emergency management official Charlie Shields says firefighters are no longer on the scene but he and members of Kentucky Division of Forestry are working to make sure the blaze does not start again.
He says they are traveling roads and making sure spot fires do not flare past the burn perimeter.
Shields also says volatile fuel on the old strip mine grounds and severely dry conditions may have contributed to the fire.
Right now the exact cause of the fire is not known.
