A new resident is moving to the hoosier state and its not your average visitor its an armadillo. Theres been two armadillo sightings in the tri-state in less a month. Indianas farm land doesnt look like Texas, but something common to the lonestar state is starting to live right alongside these crops. "We now have armadillos in the hoosier state." The first armadillo sighting in Vanderburgh county happened along Old Henderson Road. Last month an Armadillo was also seen in Gibson County. "All I can do is laugh," says Mark Crowley with Tri-State Outdoor News. Mark Crowley is the self proclaimed tri-state armadillo expert. He says the animal native to central america and mexico has also been seen in Knox county. This summers hot weather is one thing that makes our area so appealing. "If someone says I saw an armadillo I wouldnt doubt it one bit." Armadillo sightings are not as unusual in our neighboring state "Illinois is averaging 120 armadillo sightings every year some in wabash county." With so many sightings in Illinois theyre probably coming to Indiana from there but dont think the rivers are an issue with the move. They probably help the migration. Armadillos are notorious hitch hikers. They like to stay close to water. Thats actually what they use to get around. "They jump a barge in texas end up in Illinois or Iindiana." And its home sweet home in the heartland." You may be wondering what an armadillo would do during the winter here. Crowley says they borough to protect themslves from the elements. So the next time you see a groundhog hole - it could be home to an armadillo.
