breaking news
Evansville firefighters battled two fires Wednesday morning.
The first blaze sent one man to St. Marys Medical Center for smoke inhalation.
It started a little after midnight in the kitchen of a home at 1904 East Powell Street.
Fire investigators say a stove burner ignited the fire.
They managed to contain it to the kitchen, but heavy smoke did damage other parts of the home.
Crews said there was so much stuff there that they turned the case over to Code Enforcement.
Were told the home owners injuries didnt appear to be life-threatening.
And around 4:30 that morning... Evansville firefighters were called to an apartment downtown.
Theyre calling the Riverside Drive fire "suspicious," noting there were signs of forced entry.
The blaze started in a closet and was initially contained.
But around 9:00, it fired back up again and crews had to head back out to the scene.
Investigators still dont know if the apartment was vacant at the time.
