Indianapolis Taxi Drivers Get Foot-Washing Area
(Indianapolis) -- Muslim taxi drivers at Indianapolis International airport are getting a foot washing area.
Thats according to "USA Today," which says the airport has tentative plans to install floor-level sinks in a new taxi staging area.
The plan has drawn complaints from some in the community who say that such an accommodation for a religious group at a public facility is unconstitutional.
The proposal calls for a floor sink in the mens and womens restrooms in a new taxi building, which is scheduled to open late next year.
Airport spokesman David Dawson says the sink plans are preliminary and taxpayer funds wont be used to pay for them.
He says the sinks will more easily permit Muslim drivers to wash their feet before prayer.
The drivers now use counter-level sinks, which Dawson says can get messy, wet and pose a danger to users.
