New Billboards Promote Lincoln’s Indiana Home
LINCOLN CITY, IND. - As the nation prepares to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s 200th Birthday, his boyhood home Spencer County, Indiana, is highlighting its Lincoln-themed attractions with a series of new billboards.
The new billboards, which invite people to “Visit Lincoln’s Indiana Boyhood Home,” are located on Highway 60E in Owensboro, Ky., and I-65 near Scottsburg, Ind. A billboard with the same design is already up on I-64 near Evansville and will remain in place. The photo used on the billboard was taken at Lincoln Pioneer Village in Rockport.
In Spencer County, visitors can see a working farm and cabins typical of the structures where Lincoln lived, worked and learned. The mighty Ohio River still rolls along our scenic banks where Lincoln ferried passengers out to passing steamboats.
“Lincoln’s boyhood lessons and values are as relevant today as they were nearly 200 years ago,” said Melissa Miller, executive director of the Spencer County Visitors Bureau. “We invite visitors to come here and trace the past of a man whose legacy is still forging the future.”
Plans are well underway for Spencer County’s commemoration of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. A complete listing of special events is available at www.ThinkLincoln.org. Spencer County’s Bicentennial Celebration, which is endorsed by the United States Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (www.Lincoln200.gov), will begin on May 11, 2008, with a Mother’s Day event at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, where Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, is buried. Special Lincoln events will be celebrated throughout Spencer County through the fall of 2009.
