Parents and students clapped and cheered the news at Monday nights EVSC school board meeting: no changes will be made this year to the high school graduation schedule.
First year Superintendent Dr. Vince Bertram proposed moving all five high school graduations to one day in the spring. This year, that single day would have been May 24, the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Bertram wanted to see the graduations take place at their traditional locations, including the Reitz Bowl, Central Stadium and Roberts Stadium. He suggested having them happen at staggered intervals from 11am to 7pm.
The purpose of the shift would be to accommodate families, friends and staff wishing to attend more than one graduation. The current schedule features some ceremonies that overlap, making that impossible in some cases.
Parents and students complained about the proposed changes because of the Memorial Day holiday, and because of the late notice. Dr. Bertram and board members took those concerns to heart at Mondays meeting, opting to keep the schedule the same for this year. Changes may be considered for the 2008-09 school year, however.
