Owensboro was Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletchers final stop in an 8 city pre-election barn storming tour. His message: values matter. The Republican Incumbent is facing a stiff challenge from Democrat Steve Beshear, and most polls show him trailing Beshear by a double digit margin. On his final push, the Governor stressed the differences between his social values and those of his challenger, focusing on traditional conservative rallying points opposing same sex marriage and benefits, pro-life, pro-second amendment and supporting the display of the 10 commandments in the state house. Fletcher ordered the commandments posted as part of a historical display in the rotunda in Frankfurt before his campaign swing. Fletcher also focused on his economic stimulus efforts, which helped land a bio-diesel plant in Owensboro, and secure a Peabody Coal Gassification plant for Western Kentucky. He also stressed his work to remove the tolls from the Audubon Parkway, and efforts to have the highway turned into an interstate spur once I-69 connects through the state. Fletcher is the first Republican to run the state since 1971. He is hoping voters see him as a political outsider, and is casting Beshear as a throwback to unscrupulous politicians of the past.
