Evansville city vehicles are going green and in doing so, potentially saving green. Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel is hoping his new plan will cut down on air pollution while saving money. Its always nice to out for a breath of fresh air, the problem is, the air is not always so fresh. Thats why Mayor Weinzapfel has initiated a green fleet policy. The policy means city departments purchase and operate vehicles that are the most energy efficient, have low emission, and are cost effective. The Metro Evansville Transit System has already implemented this plan. The result? City officials report a 22 percent reduction in fuel and a savings of more than 4 thousand dollars per year, per bus. While the hybrid buses arent cheap, about 450 thousand dollars, they pay back through operating and maintenance costs. The fire department known for its bright red colors, is also turning a bit green. Administrators there will soon be driving Toyota Prius hybrids instead of the traditional Crown Victorias. But is the police department blue on the policy? After all they just purchased a Dodge Charger, and may obtain more in the future. Not the case, says the Mayor who says officers still need cars that will hold up in a pursuit. Another part of the green fleet plan, a no-idling policy for all city employed drivers. In January the Mayor signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, and sees this effort more than just a phase. The Mayor says hed also like to see energy efficiency extended in the future to include business offices and new buildings.
