They are now state champions. The Reitz Panthers beat the Lowell Red Devils 33 to 14 to become the number one football program in the state. Its big news for many serious fans on the westside. Doug Long played football for Reitz high school in the seventies. He wasnt able to make to Indianapolis to see the game in person but watched Reitz take an early lead from Smittys. Long says he knows people that went up Saturday to the game with no tickets...but were trying to get them one way or another. Over at Hagedorns Bar and Grill it was a different crowd but the same enthusiasm. Tony Weyer a Reitz football fan says most people think of the westside as Mater Dei football but a state championship will make the rivalry between the two teams even bigger. A pep rally to celebrate the championship is scheduled for the Reitz football team tomorrow evening at 4 in the Reitz home gym.
