The University of Evansville is preparing for the 30th anniversary of the UE plane crash. 29 members of the Purple Aces basketball team and its supporters were killed December 13, 1977. The school will hold a memorial service next week to honor those who died. President Stephen Jennings, current coach Marty Simmons and a former student will all speak. UE Chaplain Brian Erickson will preside over the service. Erickson says, "Theres no event more substantial in the history of UE in forming our identity and knowing who we are so its an honor for me to even be a part of it." The service begins at noon in the Neu Chapel. It will conclude in Memorial Plaza near the weeping basketball that was put up two years after the crash to honor those who died.
