Do Not Drive on Flooded Streets

CITY CRACKS DOWN ON DRIVERS ON FLOODED STREETS Heavy and violent rains associated with winter rainstorms can result in local flooding in any city, and Owensboro is no exception. This flooding is caused by the sudden and heavy collection of water that simply does not have time to drain through our system. Driving on flooded streets is a hazard to motorists who may become stranded in deep water and to property owners when water is pushed up to their homes by motorists transiting flooded streets. In order to reduce the danger to motorists and to protect private property, the Owensboro Police Department will close flooded streets through the use of temporary signs. Motorist should be aware that these traffic devices carry the force of law and that drivers who disregard these signs and drive on closed streets may be subject to ticketing and fines of up to $100.00. Motorists should always take a safe route that keeps them out of deep water. In particularly violent storms, it may be advisable to park on higher ground and wait for the flooding to abate. The Owensboro Police Department does not like to issue tickets but will vigorously pursue those who violate the law and drive on flooded streets.
