Major Study Shows Red Meat Consumption Raises Lung Cancer Risk (Washington, DC) -- Eating a lot of red meat or processed meat products can raise a persons risk for developing lung, colorectal and other cancers. Thats the conclusion of a National Cancer Institute study involving half-a-million people age 50 to 71. The eight-year diet and health study, done in partnership with AARP, showed substantially higher risk for several forms of cancer in participants who ate a lot of red or processed meats. More than 53-thousand cases of cancer were diagnosed in study participants. The researchers noted that both red and processed meats are sources of saturated fat and iron, which can be cancer-causing. The link between meat consumption and cancer risk has been reported in more than 100 studies done in many countries with diverse diets, according to the new studys research team.
