Tensions are rising in Knight Township because theyre only 3 weeks away from losing their fire protection. The board met with the fire chief and community members Tuesday to contract negotiations. The fire department says they will not work without a contract. The township will pay $271,000 for one year. The fire department wants $450,000 for two years. The only way to get that now is emergency funding. The trustee says by her calculations that would cost taxpayers $8 for every $100 of their homes assessed value. Fire Chief Chris Wathen says by his math a person who owns a $140,000 home would only pay about $13 a year in extra taxes. Its the people paying that money who are worried the most about the looming deadline. Durham says shell go back and re-evaluate her numbers to see where the difference is. There is another meeting planned Friday morning where the trustees will discuss looking at borrowing services from the city of Evansville. The City says they are still looking into what it would cost them to cover Knight Township.
