breaking news
MasterBrand Cabinets, based out of Jasper, is laying off more than 200 employees. This week about 260 employees received notice their jobs would end in January 2008. The layoffs are believed to be connected to the recent slump in new home construction.
The Majority of the cuts will happen at the companys Ferdinand, Indiana plant. Employees who spoke with Fox 7 say they company has been scaling back its operation for some time, trying to find ways to keep its workforce in place. Reduced hours and a slowed production line was apparently not enough to stave off the cuts.
One employee said the company promised laid off workers Christmas pay and benefits through the end of January. The layoffs are expect to become official on January 4, 2008.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development will deployia rapid response team to Dubois County to work with the laid off employees and help them find alternative employment.
