New ads are taking a strong stance for changes in the property assessment system. Indianas Association of Realtors is airing new radio and internet spots asking for support to do away with township assessors..... shifting the responsibilities to the county assessor. The property tax issue is, of course, not a new one. But a recent recommendation from a state commission to streamline local government and these new ads are giving the idea of changing the system momentum. Vanderburgh Co. Assessor, Jonathan Weaver says it definitely make it more uniform with nine elected officials running around the county assessing....everyone has a different opinion of value. everyone has a different opinion of value. " We tried to contact a number of Township assessors but they didnt want to go on camera. But Knight Township assessor Al Folz did say he thinks the decision should be left up to residents. Newly proposed legislation could allow assessment reform to finally happen this session.
