Thomas Matthew Yancy began his 10 year Tuesday for an assault that left his ex-girlfriend in a semi-comatose condition.
Yancy was arrested last year for beating his pregnant girlfriend in November of 2006. He was charged with 2nd Degree Assault. Ex-girlfriend Ashley Chaney was trying to leave an abusive relationship, and was in the process of moving out of the Wesbster County home the two shared when the attack happened. She delivered a healthy 5 pound baby girl in May, despite being hospitalized. She is still unable to take care of herself, and can not communicate.
Her family says the court ruling that gives Yancy the maximum 10 year sentence is a hollow victory, because there is no guarantee that Ashley will ever recover. They plan to be at all of Yancys parole hearings, which could begin as early as 2 years.
