Indiana School Changes?

Does the school year start too soon? Indiana students could look forward to a September start to classes if an Indiana law maker gets his way. State senator Dennis Kruse wants to see the Hoosier state push the first day of school back past labor day. Some educators think this is a useless piece of legislation that senator Dennis Kruse has introduced, but the senator says there is sound reasoning for moving the start of school back to September from the standard august start date. The I-Step tests have been moved to spring, so Kruse says it isnt as important to get kids in class 3 weeks before labor day. Kruse also believes that a later start will benefit the states tourism industry, allowing more families to travel in the warm, dry month of August. And more school age kids to staff tourist destinations, like Spencer Countys Holiday World. But is that enough to get law makers to back a state mandated post labor day start? Michigan recently passed a similar bill, mandating a post labor day start. Its expected to be a big benefit for the tourism industry there. To make up for potential lost classroom days, Kruse recommends adding 15-20 minutes to each school day, which over equal several instruction days. Will it work here? Certainly some opposition, but nice for parents and kids wanting a bit longer summer.
