GE Plans To Close Bloomington Refrigeration Plant
(Bloomington) -- Mounting losses at the GE Consumer and Industrial refrigeration plant in Bloomington is expected to result in the plants closing.
Workers at the facility have been told by GE that it will shutter operations by the fourth quarter of 2009.
Nearly 900 people will be out of work when the closing takes place.
A majority would be eligible for GE retirement and pension benefits.
The company says in a statement that it lost 45-million dollars on the Bloomington plant last year.
A growing demand for newer styles of refrigerators not made in Bloomington is blamed for the poor results.
