An Evansville lawmaker is proposing legislation that would create a tax credit for qualified companies that employ veterans. State Representative Suzanne Crouch was in Evansville to announce the bill. She says it would allow employers to receive a credit of up to 10% of the wages paid to the veteran or up to $500. This would apply to veterans discharged from military service after September 11th, 2001. Mark Acker of the Veterans Affairs office says, "Veterans are often forgotten when they come back. With this legislation that we hope will be part of Indiana law, veterans may feel the recourse of employment when they return home." The bill is currently awaiting a hearing. Upon passage, the bill would take effect January 1, 2009.
