The Centers For Disease Control is finally launching an investigation into what many consider a bizarre and mysterious condition. One thats been affecting at least a handful Tri-Staters for years. People with Morgellons Disease have red welts and a constant itchy, creepy crawling feeling under the skin. Right now, theres no cure, and we dont even know a cause. In fact, some doctors think its all in the patients minds. The new C.D.C. study will be looking at patients in northern California - an area the c-d-c says is a hotbed for reported cases. But people who have Morgellons say this disease is everywhere. And the C.D.C. uses the term "hotbed" to avoid mass hysteria. Emergency medicine expert doctor Tamarra Kuittinen says if a cause is found, it could be something weve never seen before. "unfortunately a lot of people who suffer from this condition are thought to have delusional parasitosis. So its thought to be they have a delusion or a fixed belief, which is not true because there is no evidence of it, but, and there is no evidence. We havent yet been able to find any organism in any of these lesions. No bacteria, no virus, no parasite, no nothing. So for the patients, it is very frustrating because what they have a very real thing." The study is expected to last a year. Researchers will be collecting skin, blood, and urine samples.
