Thirteen Die On Kentucky Roadways Last Week (Jan. 14 through Jan. 20, 2008)



(FRANKFORT, Ky.) - Preliminary statistics indicate that Thirteen people died in nine separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Monday, Jan. 14 through Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008. All of the fatalities were traveling in motor vehicles and ten of the victims were not wearing seat belts. One quintuple-fatality crash occurred in Gallatin County. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Crittenden, Fayette, Jefferson, Knox, Menifee, Logan and Perry (2) counties. Through Jan. 20, preliminary statistics* indicate that 43 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2008. This is 1 less than reported for this time period in 2007. Of the 40 motor vehicle fatalities, 35 victims were not wearing seat belts. There have been 3 motorcycle fatalities and one of those was not wearing a helmet. A total of 10 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
