Vanderburgh County Commissioners appear to be keeping their promise to move swiftly to preserve Hamilton Golf Course. They will meet behind closed doors Frida, to take a closer look at the lease for the links. Countless games of golf lay ahead for Kianoa Rosaldo. But this could very well be the last time he plays the course here at Hamilton, the place where he learned the game 4 years ago. In the 34 years since this golf course was carved out of what many saw as unusable land, its been a training ground for the young, and a retreat for seasoned golfers. The land was leased from the county, and the course built and maintained by the Hamilton family. Citing the lack of another long term lease opportunity, current operator Jim Hamilton decided it was too costly to invest in upgrading the course to keep it competitive, and will close up shop February first. Its becoming clear, there is plenty of public support in favor of keeping Hamilton a golf course. These supporters urged county commissioners to find a way to preserve the course. Now and for future generations of golfers. County commissioners say there is not enough money in the budget for them to take on operation of the course outright, but said they are working feverishly to find some way to save Hamilton. And in a measure of good faith, have scheduled a closed door meeting for Friday to discuss the future of the lease on the property. They are also looking at dates in February for an open forum to get full public comment, and examine the possibility of landing a new operator here.
