Standoff Ends After Putting School in Lockdown

6:00pm Update: There is no word yet on what charges Greg Wells might face for a four hour standoff with Evansville Police. Wells was taken in to custody Thursday without incident or injury after locking himself in his car and holding a gun to his head. Police SWAT members tossed OC gas cannisters (a form of pepper spray), and used concussion grenades to distract and disorient Wells. They also used non-lethal bean bag rounds fired from shotguns to break out the windows and mirrors of Wells car. Their patience paid off when Wells surrendered. Neighbors say he is disabled, but have no idea what might have sparked the ordeal. The described him as a peaceful and friendly man. Update: The standoff ended at 1:00 p.m. after officers shot several rounds of OC gas into the car where the suspect was held up. He surrendered peacefully at that time and was taken to the hospital. More details tonight on Fox 7 News at 6:00 p.m. Police identified the suspect as Greg Wells of 2129 East Sweetser Avenue in Evansville. News Release From EVSC Beginning at 11 a.m.: Fox 7 Has Crew at Standoff Scene A situation has occurred near Fairlawn Elementary School where a man has barricaded himself either inside his home or a car near the school and is threatening to kill himself. The man is not on school property. The Evansville Police Department SWAT team is on the scene and Fairlawn is on lockdown. All of the classes on the side of the building where the incident is taking place have been moved to a safe location inside the building. There are also Evansville Police Department officers inside the building. The EVSC is asking parents NOT to come to Fairlawn to pick up their children at this time. Any movement in and out of the building to a vehicle poses more potential risk than keeping the children inside the school, where they are currently safe.
