breaking news
What caused a car to burst into flames, killing the driver? Thats what Indiana State Police want to know tonight. Neighbors on a rural Perry County road saw flames coming from inside a car. When fire crews arrived, they found the charred remains of a man inside This all happened on a rural road just north of Tell City.
A Pontiac seems to have burst into flames while driving, trapping and killing 31 year old Joseph Dixon. Most of the evidence state police have to work with, is badly charred. This was the car Joseph Dixon was driving on Boyd Road, just north of Tell City. The best that detectives can determine, fire broke out inside the passenger compartment while he was driving.
By the time folks living out here saw the flames, the fire was too hot for them to approach the car. A 911 call brought fire crews from near by Tell City. Thats when they discovered Dixons body inside. Preliminary autopsy results show he died from smoke inhalation. Detectives have a theory on how the blaze may have started. A search of the vehicle turned up common equipment for manufacturing methamphetamine.
If a mobile meth lab exploded inside the car, the flames and smoke may have quickly overwhelmed Dixon. The Perry County Coroner says there were no other signs of trauma. So these blackened clues may be all investigators have to solve this puzzle.
State Police say Joseph Dixon wasnt actually the owner of the car. Theyre hoping anyone who might have seen him or heard from him before the fire, might be able to shed some light on what he was doing.
