The Gibson County Chapter of the American Red Cross has activated its emergency response plan to help local families affected by rising river levels along the Wabash and White Rivers. "We are currently assisting two individuals, but expect to increase those numbers to rise dramatically beginning Monday morning as many roads become flooded," said Greg Waite, Executive Director. "We do not want to see anyone become trapped by rising waters and encourage anyone that needs to evacuate their homes to do so safely and call our office at (812) 386-6300. We are ready to open shelters, provide meals and other assistance as needed." Currently, the American Red Cross is assisting hundred of families throughout the Hoosier state due to the rising river levels. "We have supplies and personnel ready, and at a moments notice can further activate to meet the needs of Gibson County." River levels are expected to rise to moderate flooding levels before they will crest sometime next weekend. One complicating factor could be Mondays expected winter storm which could drop temperatures, bring freezing rain and ice. Waite says "Flooding, Power Outages, whatever Mother Nature throws our way we are prepared to help." Volunteers with the Gibson County American Red Cross Disaster Action team have been training for all of these scenarios and are prepared to help as needed. From shelters to mobile feeding, trained American Red Cross volunteers are ready to step up and help in your hour of need.
