Brent Johnson named Outstanding Young Band Director

Brent Johnson, Band Director at Daviess County High School, was named the 2008 Outstanding Young Band Director by the Phi Beta Mu National Bandmaster’s Fraternity on Saturday, Feb. 9. The presentation was made at the Kentucky All-State Band Concert, which was held at the Kentucky Center for the Arts in Louisville in conjunction with the Kentucky Music Educators Association State In-Service Conference. The award was presented by Phi Beta Mu member Mark Benningfield, who is pictured at right in the attached photo. Award recipients are chosen by band directors across the state of Kentucky each year to honor a young director who has completed at least five years of teaching band while demonstrating leadership, dedication, and success in the field. Phi Beta Mu is the only national bandmaster’s fraternity that works to promote better bands and the development of better musicians in schools throughout the world. The membership of this prestigious group of educators includes the premier wind band conductors and band directors in the world. Johnson is in his second year as the Band Director at DCHS. Prior to this appointment, he served as band director at Owensboro High School from 2004-2006 and also as band director at Elizabethtown High School from 2002-2004. At both Owensboro and Elizabethtown, Johnson’s concert bands were recognized with consistent distinguished ratings and were consecutively placed on Exemplary Performance Status by the KMEA Festival adjudication panel. While in Elizabethtown, the EHS Marching Band was selected as a 2003 Kentucky Class AA State Finalist. In 2006, the DCHS Marching Band was honored by being selected one of Kentucky’s State Finalists in Class AAAAA at the KMEA State Marching Band Championships. In the same year, the DCHS Band was honored with unanimous distinguished ratings at both district and state concert band festivals. In 2007, the DCHS Marching Band made its first appearance as a Bands of America Regional Finalist at the Tennessee Regional, and the Band of Pride made a return as a finalist to the MTSU Contest of Champions. Brent is a member of the Kentucky Music Educator’s Association, the Kentucky Education Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the National Band Association, and currently serves the Band Chairman for the 2nd District Band Director’s Association. He is a 2001 summa cum laude graduate of Murray State University and is currently working to complete his master’s degree in music education from Western Kentucky University. He has been recognized for his efforts in teaching by being named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year in 2006 and has been listed in “Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers” for the past five years.
