Flying Candy Gets Bus Driver in Trouble

IPS Investigating Bus Driver Abuse Allegations (Indianapolis) -- An investigation has been launched by the Indianapolis Public School system after several children claim a bus driver physically and verbally abused them Friday morning. Angry parents claim that IPS tried to cover up the incident and they are outraged that they did not received personal calls from the school after a school police officer interviewed their children and sent them to class. According to children on the bus, 48-year-old Charles Areh, lost control on Friday morning on IPS bus 331 when several pieces of flying candy hit him in the head. One student, fourth grader, Darshawn Best said, "He grabbed my hat off of me and he slapped me on my back and my head." IPS spokesman Mary Louise Bewley said, "The bus does have a video camera on it and so our officers will be able to see exactly what occurred. Well talk to students. Well talk to the bus driver himself." Areh has been suspended pending the investigation. He was hired on October 15, 2007. (Copyright 2008 by Newsroom Solutions) RNS-02-19-08 0934CST
