Researchers Stumped Over High Suicide Rate In Middle-Aged
(New York, NY) -- The high rate of suicides among middle-aged Americans is baffling researchers.
"The New York Times" reports between 1999 and 2004, suicides among 45-to-54-year-olds has increased nearly 20-percent.
One researcher noted theres a "social-issue bias," because prevention hotlines are targeted toward those 19 or younger and 65 or older, but does not aim for those in middle-age.
Yet, a representative from the Center for the Study of Prevention of Suicide said the bulk of suicides burden occurs during the middle years of life.
Also, suicide is usually a signal of long-brewing troubles such as mental illness, drug use, unemployment or personal failures.
Some experts say the use and abuse of prescription drugs is the culprit.
For the almost 30-percent increase in suicide among women 50 to 54, others suggest a drop in the use of hormone replacement therapy after health warnings in 2002.
One doctor said without a "psychological autopsy," quote, "were kind of in the dark."
