City Says "A Okay" With Ice Storm

News Release: From: Mayors Office City of Evansville City Staying Ahead of Ice Storm (EVANSVILLE, IN) – With an ice storm warning in effect, City trucks hit the streets at 7 a.m. this morning in order to clear the roads of ice and prevent any further accumulation. Drivers began with the primary routes, which take about three to three and-a-half hours to cover. After that, they took another pass at the primary routes and cleared the second lanes on four lane streets. Drivers also checked out the condition of two lane streets on primary routes to see if more salt needed to be applied. Secondary routes will be treated after the primary routes have been salted twice. This entire process takes about eight hours. Second shift drivers will be in at 3:00 p.m. and stay on throughout the evening. The City uses salt on our streets that is treated with a calcium chloride boost. It has a hotter melting point and prevents refreezing below zero. Usually 500 tons of salt are spread during a regular snow event. During last weeks’ storm, about 800 tons of salt were used due to the continuous application. Snow plow drivers report that main streets are clear and passable at the moment, but side streets are slick. It’s a good idea not to travel if you don’t need to be out on the roads, otherwise drivers should exercise caution. To report problems on City streets, call the Street Maintenance Department at 435-6000. METS is running all of its regular routes, but they are on a 5 – 10 minute delay.
