Influenza Widespread In 49 States, Kills 22 Children (Washington, DC) -- Flu activity this year has killed at least 22 children and is considered widespread in 49 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says flu activity has increased in the past week. An official with the CDC says state health departments are being asked to keep track of who becomes gets the flu during the epidemic. They are also seeking data on who has been vaccinated and if the flu drugs were effective. All children between 6 months and 5 years old, people over 50, those with chronic illnesses and pregnant women are advised to have an annual flu shot. The FDA has agreed to change the mix of next years flu vaccine to match the drifting strains of the illness. The three strains in the current flu cocktail have mutated. There are reports in Europe some and are becoming resistant to available vaccines such as Tamiflu. Officials in the U.S. say there is little evidence that has occurred in this country.
