Tyler Miles tweeted at country music star Jake Owen, asking him to help make a prom date request special. The star came through, and it's catching the attention of local and national media.
Miles wants to make his last prom a day he and his date will never forget. "Thought it'd be a unique idea and I like Jake Owen -- so does [Larissa] -- so it was just off a whim, I guess. I got lucky."
Owen agreed -- and gave Lewis the surprise of a lifetime. Owen's twitter account shows he tweeted at Lewis saying, "Hey @larissa_lewisss. My name is Jake. We've never met, but I have a question for you. Hope to hear from you, -J"
"I got on and saw it and freaked out," says Lewis. She says she called Miles, asking about the tweet. But Miles pretended he didn't know what it was about.
"I finally tweeted him back and I just couldn't believe it was actually him," says Lewis, who replied to Owen's tweet, "Hey Jake! What's the question?"
Owen -- playing a cupid-like role -- tweeted, "@tylermiles14 wants you to go to prom w/ him. I said I'd ask u if he treated you nice."
"It was just so crazy that he actually tweeted me, for one, but I was excited to go with [Tyler]," says Lewis. "I was just in shock that Jake actually tweeted me."
"I just wanted it to be different," says Miles about his prom proposal. "Everyone always has that cool idea."
"I'm a big fan [of Jake Owen]. I know about every song. He's one of my favorites," says Lewis. She saw Owen play at Owensboro's Big O Festival in the Summer.
The star-stricken prom proposal is where the story begins, but the two teens hope it's not where it ends. Now they're teaming up with Owensboro country radio station, WBRK 92.5, to try to bring the country music star to their prom.
"We decided, you know, they're going to the prom together because of Jake Owen so let's get Jake to the prom," says WBRK Afternoon Drive Announcer Dave Spencer. "So the campaign is now off full steam ahead in getting Jake Owen to come to the prom. And after all, we're talking about Owensboro, you know, we're gonna turn Owensboro into Jake OWENsboro."
"I think it'd be awesome having him at our senior prom. I think it'd be a great experience," says Lewis.
Spencer says he's met Owen before, and thinks the teens have a pretty good chance. "I have a good feeling about this. I do. I really do," says Spencer.
Whether Owen comes to the prom or not -- it's an experience the two teens say they'll never forget. "Everyone knows about it now. It's just really memorable," says Lewis. "It'll be fun for sure," says Miles."
Miles says he's trying to turn the campaign to get Owen at his prom -- into a fundraiser for tornado-devastated Henryville. He the money would help those seniors have a prom. WBRK estimates they'll know if Owen will attend the prom in two to three weeks.
