Seat Belts Prevent Serious Injury during Head-on Crash
Posey County – Monday afternoon, February 25, at 3:30 p.m., Indiana State Police responded to I-64
at the Griffin exit after a driver fell asleep and collided into another vehicle head-on.
Preliminary investigation revealed that John Dilges, 77, of Fairfield, IL, was driving his 2000 Ford passenger car westbound on I-64 at the four mile-marker when he fell asleep. His vehicle crossed the grassy median and struck an eastbound vehicle, driven by Michael Stapleton, 44, of Trenton, OH. Dilges was not injured. Beverly Dilges, 70, who was a front seat passenger, was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Stapleton and his front seat passenger, Michael Kroeger, 43, of Cincinnati, OH, were both taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where they were treated for minor injuries. Both vehicles were totaled. “Seat belts definitely prevented serious injuries in this crash,” said Trooper Kylen Compton. The interstate at the Griffin exit was closed for approximately one hour while troopers investigated this crash.
