Daviess Merger?

By: LaTonya Stephens
Updated: February 27, 2008
Could Daviess county and Owensboro city governments become one? It could happen sooner rather than later. Combining the city and county government has come up in the area many times. But Tuesday, Daviess County Judge Executive, Reid Haire recommended a county-wide vote to decide whether to take the first step. That step would be forming a charter commission to study how best to combine individual departments. Some residents against it, worry about an increase in taxes. While those for it say it would make local government more efficient. Others say they feel its worth it to collect information about what would be gained and lost. The countys fiscal court will vote on Judge Executive Haires recommendation in March. If passed, residents could vote to form the charter commission by early summer.
