Two men in Evansville are charged with animal fighting. It all happened this Saturday at Bellemeade Park. The fight apparently went down in public.. in broad daylight. Officials tell us thats unusual for a dog fight, and say the illegal activity usually takes place underground. Some call it a sport. While others call it animal cruelty. Regardless, dog fightings a serious crime, and its not something Animal Control Superintendent, Monica Freeman says shed expect to happen around here.. "I think people are now more aware of it." Jonathan Adams and Antwaan Broomfield didnt fight their dogs to the death, yet both are charged with animal fighting.. apparently Saturday afternoon their two pit-bulls fought at Bellemeade Park drawing a crowd of nearly 300 people. When police arrived, the crowd scattered and the fight ended. The dogs were then taken to animal control. Dog fighting typically involves money and gambling. But Freeman doesnt think this fight was staged. But its still a concern for police. Recently, they found two different pitbulls chained to a dug out off Lodge road. Two phone numbers were written above their heads, and although theres no proof its related to dog fighting, officers are looking into it. We also spoke with some residents who didnt want to talk on camera, but told us theyve heard talk of dog fighting in the neighborhood. Freeman says the dogs are now considered bite-dogs and cant be adopted. The only people allowed to pick them up from the shelter them are previous owners.
