Welborn Baptist Foundation, YMCA, Team up For Bike Rental Program

Updated: January 8, 2013
The Welborn Baptist Foundation is partnering with the Downtown YMCA in Evansville, to offer a new, bike rental program.

According to the foundation's Upgrade Campaign, local bike shops frequently receive inquiries on the availability of rental programs.  That demand, plus the campaign's desire to promote bike riding within the community led to the partnership with the "Y".

"The Y is thrilled about the partnership with the Welborn Baptist Foundation's Upgrade Campaign", says Barb Dykstra, Downtown Branch Director of the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana. "The bicycle rental program will allow us to provide the community with yet another healthy lifestyle option. The Greenway is easily accessible from the Y, and will give riders a safe and scenic route to explore."

With funding through the Centers For Disease Control, and Prevention's Communities Putting Prevention to Work, 20 bikes were purchased and customized.  Each rental will include a helmet and lock.

Kevin Bain, Executive Director and CEO of the Welborn Baptist Foundation said, "It's no secret that increasing physical activity is imperative to living a healthy lifestyle.  By providing new and engaging opportunities to be active, the Upgrade Campaign hopes to improve the health of Tri-State residents."

Rental inquires may be made at the front desk of the Downtown YMCA in Evansville.  For more information about the Upgrade Campaign, click here.
