Updated: May 25, 2012

The Wabash County Sheriff has confirmed to Eyewitness News that a car is submerged in the Wabash River at the 5th Street ramp.

The Sheriff says crews were called to the scene around 8:00am, and there is at least one witness. According to the Mt. Carmel Daily Republican Register, that witness saw a four-door, white sedan drive into the river at a high rate of speed. It stopped about 50 feet from the ramp and was almost totally submerged.

The Register also reports that divers have been called to the scene, and says crews are already towing the vehicle from the river.

Sheriff Joe Keeling says the Wabash County Coroner has been called to the scene.
