After months of debate -- the fate of Roberts Stadium could be decided in the next few days. Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke is proposing the stadium property be turned into Roberts Park.

Wednesday the parks board will take a vote to decide if the mothballed stadium will be transformed into Roberts Park.

Mayor Winnecke's plan includes walking and bike trails, a lake area, dog park, outdoor skate and bike park, outdoor fitness areas for children and adults, and a walkway over the Lloyd Expressway that would connect to Evansville's state hospital.

It's a plan that's being met with conflicting opinions across the city. Lifetime Evansville resident Don Sallee says he is afraid Roberts Park wouldn't be well maintained. Sallee says a lack of landscaping and broken equipment shows the city doesn't take care of its current parks.

Some residents say although they have fond memories of Roberts Stadium -- it's time to get rid of the mothballed building. Carl and Sharon Askins say the city is spending too much money on the building's upkeep. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the city spends around 200 thousand dollars annually to let the building sit. The Askins say they think Roberts Park will be a positive solution for the property, that will benefit the community.

Tune in to Eyewitness News Wednesday for coverage on the Park Board's vote this Wednesday.

Name it something else Roberts is worn thin.("Wesselman acres outdoor recreational center") Park maintance is an ongoing problem here,if we just enforce the rules we already have in place for that it will kind of lead to advances in socally and envioromentally acceptable solutions in the parks in Evansville . The river front area is really getting bad. We need to push out the druggies and over nighters down there, if nt for anything else just to send a message of the futire of behavior in the cities parks and public areas.
